UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
